sir.
I have the honour to inform you that on
the 6th. instant, I opened the new plague branch of the Tung
Wa Hospital at Kennedy Town, and enclose for your information
an extract from a local paper containing an account of the
proceedings.
2.
During every annual plague season since 1894
except 1896, it has been necessary to open a temporary plague
hospital as a branch of the Tung Wa; and from 1897 to 1901
inclusive, owing to want of more suitable accommodation,
matsheds have been erected adjoining Kennedy Town Hospital.
In 1897 the present Colonial Secretary suggested to the Tung
Wa Hospital Committee the desirability of erecting a permanent
structure, not only as being more suitable for the treatment
of patients but also as affording greater security against
fire. The result of this suggestion was a formal application
from the Tung Wa Hospital for the grant of a site. The applica-
tion was forwarded to you and recommended in my Despatch No.
ayro 293 of 20th. October, 1899, and the grant of a site approved
99 by you in your telegram of the 2nd. December of the same year.
I would also invite your attention in this connection to
Ordinance
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,
